Next week we have a release, so I was expecting to not only be working Memorial day but to be working atleast some this weekend. Instead, I was
extremely productive this week, and we were able to declare a 3 day weekend. So I left my work laptop at work. What to do with 3 days with no work? I still haven't quite figured out yet. Sleeping isn't an option; I don't sleep in that late on the weekends. Maybe I'll go for a bike ride tomorrow.
Last night I went to bed very late. This morning I had to wake up very early to go to a dentist appointment (two fillings). After the appointment, I was feeling so bad that I fell asleep at work for 2 hours. I always seem to fall asleep after getting fillings...
Well, last week was ... interesting. I am learning what it really means to work in a start-up under start-up conditions and start-up excitement. I'm excited about how valuable I've become.
This week was what is normally referred to as an "excellent week." I accomplished a programming task in one week from design / theory to implementation. While it's importance was agreed upon, my boss doubted if it could be done and I estimated it would take me 2 1/2 weeks.
Also, on Thursday I took two hours off and went to Rancho Sante Fe. What is Rancho Sante Fe? It's the richest part of San Diego, and has the most enjoyable roads to drive in the area. The downtown area is full of people oblivious to the fact that the world revolves around the sun and not them. Whenever I'm there, things like people just stopping their car at an intersection and getting out seems to happen. (There are also many very intelligent people who earned their money through hard work as well as those who cut the grass.)
Why would I go there? Well, my dad received an invitation to test drive an
Aston Martin DB9. Since one rarely gets a dealer asking "please test drive our $180k car for an hour where the roads are fun," we jumped at the offer. The only day available was Thursday, so we went then. First my dad drove, then I drove, then I gave my dad some more time since I'd found a good stretch and he'd spent most of his time behind a truck.
The car handled beautifully, but we ended up spending most of our time in fear of it's power rather than enjoying it. 450 hp is not something you take lightly. Also, it was an automatic (it had those paddle things, but that's a waste, if you want manual, get a clutch), so it wasn't as fun to play with the engine. I think it was a very nice GT car. The problem is, I don't have the taste to appreciate a 6-figure GT car. So I looked at it's performance. Considering that the automatic made the engine feel very sluggish and non-responsive (the transmission did not like to shift), I thought that it just wasn't the right kind of performance. In addition to power, this car has a lot of luxury. There was leather all over and the shape and feel of everything looked like what a 180k car should look like. Problem is, I don't appreciate a luxury cars yet.
Final verdict: I need to grow up first before I'll be able to give this car the respect it deserves. Give me a 40k
Lotus Elise. It's got less than half the power, but then it's half the weight. With modest tuning (it's got a Toyota supra engine), it turns the car into a much more powerful machine.
Me: "Arigato Gozaimasu."
Sushi Chef (startled): "You... speak English?"
Me: "Why yes, all the time. I am quite good at it."
Sushi Chef: "I mean... Japansese."
The sushi was quite good there, and I got into a conversation with the couple near me. When I ordered my sake, I got a smaller bottle than I got from there last time. That is a good thing considering that last time the bottle was larger than I would like considering I had to drive home.
I've been fairly productive this weekend. Yesterday I worked from home and ran some erands. Today I worked out, took care of the messy bathroom sink with the half-clogged drain, and did some laundry.
Lately I've been feeling like a job posting board. In the last few months, here are the jobs I have heard about that people want filled:
- Entry level IT / systems
- Entry level programmer
- Programmer (any level)
- IT / help desk
At the same time, here are those who are looking for employment:
- Programmer with some experience, looking for a position in San Diego
- Computer Engineer / Programmer, looking for a position in CA
- Lab technician with two years experience
- CS graduate wanting to QA games
- Marketting / Administrative assistant
- One searching for slower-paced retail position
- Salesman with lots of experience
There might even be more than what I managed to remember to list here.
